- Normally, when you move an object, any texture maping follows it, the

- forget about anything complicated unless you want to render almost
- entirely in virtual ram, and lose all the speed benefits of a render

- Jamie Dixon and I worked on the blasts for both True Lies and
- Fat Man - Little Boy. We were both at PDI at the time, but have
- since started our own little company. Jamie was the effects
- supervisor/animator, and I was the programmer.
-
- Fat Man was the first blast that we did. We used a particle system
- of blobs, with some fire mapped on to it. The fire was a lot of
- fun, DreamQuest shot some huge blobs of MAPP gas in their parking
- lot late one night, and we scanned the high-speed film that they
- shot. Blobs are not the right tool for the job.
-
- For True Lies, we used a cloud renderer. The renderer that I wrote
- would render thousands of little cloudlets. Each cloudlet was
- defined as a 3D texture volume, with color and density defined at
- each voxel. These are raytraced, sort of like Jim Blinn's
- Lighting Participating Media (or something like that) paper in
- Siggraph '82 or '83. For True Lies, I had to add local lights,
- adding a bright light to the center of the roiling cloud mass
- really added that malevolent look.
-
- Jamie did a great job, I think, comping in something brighter
- (and closer!) than the sun into a daylight shot. Someone else
- mentioned that the actors did not respond to it...that was the
- whole joke! Geez.
-
- Jamie collected a lot of good bomb material. If the FBI ever
- raids his bookshelf, he's got some explaining to do.

- Click the E button next to the light value, you get a graph. Insert a key
- frame at 20 and another at 30. Set the value at frame 0 to 0%, at frame
- 20 make it 100% or whatever, and at 30 make it 0% again.
-
- Is that enough?

- 30 0

- Yes, but by the simple act of asking for a crack, you help fuel
- the demand for a crack. You make some cracker think that it would
- be worthwhile to do it - mostly so they can charge their friends
- for it. Eventually, the cracked version leaks out, and then
- thousands of people might never purchase LightWave.

- >(Hope this is not a verboten topic.)

- Of course it is!

- One thing is for sure! Win95 is MUCH slower for rendering than NT! I was
- shocked when a 25 minute render under NT went on for 50 minutes under Win95!
- HOLY COW! The only saving grace was that I could at least do some internet
- stuff while it was doing it's thing (which may have added a few minutes but
- after 25 minutes (and that was with NT doing the small preview window and
- Win95 NOT!), I didn't care. :/ Now that NT 3.51 service pack 1 has
- stabilized NT a bit and the new update to the Win95 is also more stable, I'm
- jumping over to NT again. :)

- Would it make sense to make it a clip map?

- Okay, we have some animation projects coming up that just may
- involve more rendering than we can handle. Does anyone here have
- any experience with some Raptor Renering Services? What kind of
- rates are typically charged? I have a PAR for output, so I'm looking
- mainly to have the frames rendered, then sent back on an Exabyte
- tape.
-
- So, what's the hourly rate on, say, a Raptor 3 with that cool new
- 300 MHz 21164 in it???
-
- Thanks!
